In early 2024, Joey was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder, Autoimmune Encephalitis (AE). In 2023, parts of Joey's brain began to swell and, unforunately, resulted in an aquired brain injury (ABI). He was treated at Northwestern University Hospital (Chicago) and spent several weeks at an inpatient acute rehab facility (Shirley Ryan). Joey is currently attending therapy 3 days/week, where is he re-learning how to walk, write, problem solve, tune fine motor skills.
